Career [edit]
Foundation of Maharashtra Today News (2018)
In 2018, Gorakh Popat Sonawane founded Maharashtra Today News, a digital news channel aimed at serving the Pune district with local, political, and crime news.[4] The decision to start a digital news platform came during a time when regional digital journalism was still emerging in Maharashtra.
The initial phase of establishing the channel was marked by significant challenges. Sonawane faced difficulties in recruiting reporters and anchors, as few were willing to work with a new and unestablished platform. Undeterred by these obstacles, he started the channel single-handedly, taking on multiple roles including reporter, anchor, and editor. His perseverance and self-reliance became the cornerstone of the channel's foundation.
Growth and development
Over the years, Maharashtra Today News has grown from a one-man operation to a team of 10 dedicated members.[5] The channel has established itself with a clear editorial focus on four key areas:
- Breaking Maharashtra: Timely delivery of breaking news from across Maharashtra
- Crime Reporting: In-depth coverage of criminal incidents and investigations
- Political Analysis: Comprehensive analysis of political developments
- Politics: Ground-level political reporting and coverage
This multi-dimensional approach has helped the channel build credibility and trust among its audience, particularly within Pune district where it operates.
Digital presence and reach
Maharashtra Today News has built a substantial following across multiple digital platforms. As of 2024, the channel has approximately 15,000 subscribers on YouTube, around 10,000 followers on Facebook, and about 5,000 followers on Instagram.[6] This combined reach of over 30,000 followers represents a significant audience base that trusts the channel for authentic local news coverage.
The channel's presence across YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram ensures that news reaches people on the platforms they use most frequently, making information accessible to a diverse demographic.
Recognition and impact [edit]
Maharashtra Today News has established a strong and distinct identity at the district level in Pune. In an era dominated by national news channels and large media corporations, creating a recognizable regional brand represents a significant achievement. The channel has become a trusted source for local news, political developments, and crime reporting in the Pune district.
The success of Maharashtra Today News demonstrates the continued demand for quality regional journalism and highlights the importance of local news coverage in India's diverse media landscape. Sonawane's work has also created employment opportunities for 10 individuals in the journalism sector.
